How do you know if your water heater is going out?

Some signs you need a new water heater are an old unit, rusty water, not enough hot water, noise, or leaks.

An Old Unit – If your water heater is older, you can find its exact age by looking for the serial number on the manufacturer’s sticker near the top.

Rusty Water – This is a good sign your water heater is close to failing.

Not Enough Hot Water – You may just need a larger water heater to meet your needs, there could be a problem with the thermostat, or corrosion and sediment built up can be causing issues with the burner.

Rumbling and Noise – This usually indicates a buildup of sediment at the bottom of the heater. Water is trapped underneath it at the bottom of the tank by the burner. This could cause your water heater to overheat and cause deterioration and leaks. In some cases the heater can be drained and flushed, but if too much damage has already been done it should be replaced.

Leaks – A leak could mean something needs to be tightened up, but often times is more serious. There could be a broken valve, or it could be an internal failure which would result in needing a new heater. Either way a leaking heater should never be ignored.
